Released way back in the mists of time (ok, 2012), The Room quickly became a classic. On iOS, you’re essentially paying the gold-doubling fee upfront when you buy the game. You can also watch an ad to double the amount of gold you receive at the end of the game, or pay a couple of bucks to receive it automatically. The game is free on Android, and while you can pay to unlock characters, there’s no particular need to if you’re happy putting hours into the game instead. The pixel-art graphics are functional rather than beautiful, but they do the job just fine, and mean that Dungeon Cards will run on just about any phone you have. Characters, dungeons, and special powers are unlocked by collecting the gold and gems left when you kill an enemy, and the game changes significantly based on the combination of all three. Chests can contain helpful or harmful items, while potions can have positive or negative effects, or none at all.Įach character has its own strengths and weaknesses, and they make a big difference in how you play. Some weapons affect only one square, others impact an entire line or larger area. On a very basic level, it’s as simple as that, but it’s the nuances that keep you coming back for more. Moving into an enemy with a weapon in hand (usually) deals damage to them, attacking without a weapon deals damage to you as well. So, when does the third version come out?ĭefinitely one of those games that’s simple to pick up and yet has a surprising amount of depth, I’ve spent far more hours playing Dungeon Cards recently than I care to admit.Ĭalled Rogue Cards on iOS, the mechanic is straightforward: your character lives in a 3×3 or 4×4 “dungeon” filled with traps, chests, potions, weapons, enemies, and more. Don’t expect it to get you all the way through a transcontinental flight, though. Like the original, you’ll finish it in a few hours of dedicated play, and be left wanting more yet again. It’s a game that’s far better to explore than to explain, easily worth the few dollars it costs. Platforms move up and down, sections rotate, columns move around, and there’s suddenly a path to the exit that didn’t exist a second earlier. Until you do.Įach level is different: sometimes you control both the mother and daughter characters, sometimes one or the other. It’s a mesmerizing experience, with puzzles that regularly convince you that you’ll never be able to solve them. The sequel delivers new levels and characters, but otherwise doesn’t tinker much with what made the first edition so good. Set in a colorful, Escher-inspired world, its only fault was that it was over all too quickly, leaving players desperately wanting more. Now they’ve got it. It combined gorgeous graphics with challenging problems and wonderful, wordless storytelling in a way we’d never seen before. The original Monument Valley breathed fresh air into mobile gaming. They’re all available on both iOS and Android, with no Wi-Fi needed! Without further ado, here are 14 of the best offline games to get you through your own long commutes or endless travel days. I’ve stayed away from those requiring continuous attention, or where you need to spend a lot on in-app purchases to make them enjoyable. I always keep a collection of them on my phone for whenever I have a bit of downtime and no internet, and these are the ones I’ve been returning to time and again. Intentionally or not, many developers have made great games that don’t need an internet connection at all. Thankfully, not having signal doesn’t mean you can’t play some of the best mobile games on the market. Whether it’s a long-haul flight, overnight bus ride, or just too much time spent on the subway where radio waves fear to tread, having no Wi-Fi or cell service is common even in this day and age. If you’re on the move a lot, you’ll be used to long periods of time offline.

While slowly dancing to her music, Parks integrated the positive energy into the crowd that would continue for the rest of the night. Parks performed for about 45 minutes, with songs like “Green Eyes,” “george” and “Cola.” Her performances sounded almost identical to her recorded songs, displaying how much she has perfected her soft and whisper-filled voice. Parks’ music usually falls under the R&B/Soul umbrella, and she is mostly known for songs like “Black Dog” and “Eugene.” The opening act was performed by angelic Arlo Parks, a London-based singer-songwriter. With Clairo’s “Sling” tour beginning back in February, Minneapolis fans have had more than enough time to build up excitement for the show. That line was full of indie, Generation Z fans waiting anxiously to watch Clairo, the highly acclaimed, singer-songwriter artist perform her music that covers an array of emotional topics involving relationships, self-love, and more. That song also includes the only lyrical mention of the album’s title, envisioning a potential future for herself with a “baby in a sling.A line trailed three blocks long outside of The Fillmore in downtown Minneapolis on Friday night. There’s also a college reference in “Zinnias” so specific that it’s an intersection on the Syracuse campus (curiously, where the all-night food truck used to park, and maybe still does). There are flashes of Phoebe Bridgers throughout, but that’s due more to similarities in their voices than songwriting.Īnd yes, the lyrics address many of the aforementioned topics: There’s alienation and loneliness (“I show up at the party just to leave”), a gross encounter with a music industry exec (“Why do I tell you how I feel when you’re just looking down the blouse?”), and depression and family (“Mommy, I’m afraid I’ve been talking to the hotline again”). They’ve played up the baroque touches in other ways, as well: The album is loaded with vintage keyboards - particularly Wurlitzer electric piano - and a string quartet appears on several songs. Where Rostam compensated for her relatively limited range by loading it up with echo, here she and Antonoff have multi-tracked her voice with delicately layered harmonies that, with the exception of two songs featuring Lorde, are sung entirely by her. In the process, it’s opened a whole new chapter for both of them.īut Clairo has also advanced dramatically as a singer. Vincent, Lorde, the Chicks, Pink and his own band Bleachers is enough to make one’s eyes roll at the announcement of yet another project - it finds both on musical terrain that their previous work has barely hinted at, and, surprisingly, one that is decades older than they are: Dreamy, keyboard-laden pop of the late 1960s and early 1970s, with flashes of the Zombies’ “Odessey and Oracle,” Carole King, Nilsson, Burt Bacharach, Todd Rundgren and even Weyes Blood’s 2019 album “Titanic Rising,” which also evoked that era. A collaboration with the ubiquitous Jack Antonoff - whose voluminous recent work with Taylor Swift, St. Her first full album, 2019’s “Immunity,” was co-produced with Vampire Weekend co-founder Rostam Batmanglij and found her songwriting maturing, particularly on “Bags,” “Sofia” and the opening “Alewife,” although many of the songs were essentially bedroom pop with more elaborate and imaginative arrangements. Her debut EP, “Diary 001,” is a bedroom-pop classic, with a simplicity that reflects her youth but also a depth of melody that makes it easy to imagine its songs being covered by any number of major-label artists. While Clairo (Clare Cottrill) turns 23 next month, she’s been releasing songs for nearly a decade - first via YouTube covers and gradually originals, until “Pretty Girl” captured the imagination and algorithms of millions and lofted the then-college freshman to a level of renown that saw her opening for Dua Lipa right after finishing her first year at Syracuse University. All of those things find their way into many of her lyrics, but musical advancement makes “Sling” the breakthrough that it is. Even when people are writing specifically about her songs and albums - including this remarkable latest one, “Sling” - the focus is usually on her personality, her sexuality, her background, her battles with depression and other non-musical aspects. For all the thousands of words typed and thumbed about singer-songwriter Clairo since her 2017 song “Pretty Girl” went viral, it’s astonishing - and just as astonishingly unsurprising - how few of them actually focus on her music. This is a player who helped put Real Madrid and Juventus to the knockout-phase sword in that thrilling 2018-19 Champions League campaign where Ajax got within moments of making the final, and who was once discussed as a possible successor to Sergio Busquets at Camp Nou.īut De Jong’s best performances in a Barcelona shirt have come in more advanced positions, with now 34-year-old veteran Busquets serving as a safety valve. His Barcelona career so far - spanning 138 appearances and with just a single Copa del Rey trophy to show for it - carries with it a tinge of disappointment. This is not ideal for De Jong, who had a goal of playing for Barcelona as a child and often holidayed in the Catalan city with his family before signing for them from Ajax in his homeland three years ago. He is most useful to his current club as a sellable asset and an €85million (£72.2m, $85.7m) agreement with United should take the Dutchman to Old Trafford - provided he both relents on his dream of Barcelona and agrees personal terms with his new prospective employers. Netherlands midfielder De Jong is in a strange position where his football ability is less important than the softer intangibles needed in Barcelona’s strange squad building (club and country team-mate Memphis Depay is in a similar boat). There is money owed, money deferred, money somehow being conjured up for new signings at Camp Nou and at least one too many players for one too few positions. Your Android device is running out of internal storage space. If you need to free up local storage space on your Android device, and have lots of photos on your phone, learn how to delete those images without actually losing them. How to delete photos from your Android device and retain them on Google Drive First, we quantify the share of public space allotted to pedestrians versus cars, taking the measure of “arrogance of space” as defined by Colville-Andersen 22 to a city-wide level, and showing for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, on such a large scale how planning choices can leave pedestrians with less room to walk. We bridge the mentioned data gap by collecting comprehensive datasets of sidewalk and road infrastructure from ten world cities across three continents. In this work, we address the problems of space equity and traffic-restricted streets from the perspective of complex networks. So far, these interventions have been mostly local and manual, and have not directly benefited from a complex systems approach of treating urban sidewalks as a network, in part due to a generalized lack of publicly available data on sidewalk infrastructure worldwide. It is precisely on sidewalks that most cities have implemented ad hoc interventions (from temporary sidewalk widenings to complete pedestrianisation) to give pedestrians more space and to avoid large gatherings, measures which serve to provide people with a sense of relief –with evolutionary grounds 19– in terms of perceived risk 3, 20, 21. While the term “public space” may conjure up images of parks and greenways 18, we focus here on perhaps the most important –and surely the most overlooked– public space of all: the sidewalk. Should cities strive for distance goals (1, or 10, or 100 walkable kilometers)? Should they rather pay attention to routing and connectivity? Such a challenging shift in urban design calls for interdisciplinary efforts to understand how cities might be reformed efficiently and safely 17, towards a more sustainable future. Among those pushing for permanence, e.g., the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, there are common goals (sustainability, equitable space share, active mobility) but no clear city-level methodological guidelines. In this context, some cities are making Open Street programs permanent, but many others are not. Furthermore, the potential emergence of new strains and future epidemics (for which outdoor transmissibility is unpredictable) 15, 16 calls for better preparedness and planning. Many public transit systems have not recovered from the precipitous drop in ridership seen over the past year 12, 13, 14, while car use has remained steady, or is even expanding 13. Now, as vaccine-driven herd immunity presses ahead 11 in some countries, the long-term effects of the COVID-19 crisis on people’s daily habits remains unclear. It was at this point that cities world-wide took the opportunity presented by the pandemic to improve and expand pedestrian infrastructure 8, not only to help people comply with recommendations, but also to promote social benefits in terms of health, environmental sustainability, and economics that are associated with active forms of transportation 9, 10. City-dwellers had then to learn on-the-fly how to move around in the public space of the city, while at the same time keeping a distance of at least 1.5 m from their fellow citizens 5, 6, 7. By 2021, it has become clear that outdoor transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is rare 1, and yet a preceding lack of evidence, along with an exacerbated public risk perception based on uncertainty 2, 3, 4, resulted in outdoor physical distancing recommendations, which in turn placed more pressure on streets in general, and sidewalks in particular. The heuristic prevents the sidewalk connectivity breakdown, while preserving the road network’s functionality.Ĭalled variously “Open”, “Slow”, “Safe”, or “Shared” streets, the vision of limiting traffic on urban roadways to free up public space for pedestrians and cyclists clearly predates 2019-but the pandemic crisis has emboldened it decisively. Finally, we compare a no-intervention scenario with a shared-effort heuristic, in relation to the performance of sidewalk infrastructures to guarantee physical distancing. Next, we connect these geometries to build a sidewalk network –adjacent, but irreducible to the road network. Here, we leverage sidewalk data from ten cities in three continents, to first analyse the distribution of sidewalk and roadbed geometries, and find that cities present an unbalanced distribution of public space, favouring automobiles at the expense of pedestrians. So far, due to a scarcity of data and methodological shortcomings, these efforts have lacked the system-level view of treating sidewalks as a network. Cities world-wide have taken the opportunity presented by the COVID-19 pandemic to improve and expand pedestrian infrastructure, providing residents with a sense of relief and pursuing long-standing goals to decrease automobile dependence and increase walkability.
