The SKybox 16s completely fills the roof rack area with just enough separate from the radio/XM antenna. The Thule, on the other hand, uses five-layered ABS plastic. They don’t pay much attention to aesthetics, but this is a rather excellent and durable material. For instance, Yakima’s cargo box models have a textured finish. Due to the Yakima's tension bars on the inside of the Skybox, (vs the Thule Ascent/Atlantis) I felt it was a sturdier model. The only thing that varies between the two brands is the sizes and shapes they offer. If I had a wider box, I couldn't keep the ski racks, and would have to put skis in the car (They wouldn't fit in a 58" box). I looked at both the Thule and Yakima options. And if you see the cars in the background of these photos, they have the shorter and wider cargo boxes (a bunch of crazy ice climbers on a very cold day). A shorter rack might allow the wind to come up the windshield and over the top. Partner will not use any Confidential Information for any purpose other than to inform consumers of the right Yakima product fit. This benefit is confidential and should be kept Confidential. Of course this comes with some responsibilities. Our Q-Tower and BaseLine fits are specified for a fixed position and should not be moved from the indicated measurements (the 4 M's the crossbar spread is the M4 distance. And this is the reason we see the Yakima SkyBox on more rooftops than any other carrier: for 679 for the 16-cubic-foot model (729 for the 18 cu.-ft.-version), you get durable storage for your gear and tool-free installation that will accommodate most factory and after-market racks. This spacing will determine which accessories and what load your vehicle can carry. But I still have the ski racks on one side. As our valuable partner, Yakima is sharing our 'Confidential Information' with you. Crossbar spread is determined by where the towers of your rack are placed on your vehicle. I'm going to run without the box for a couple trips and see what happens to the MPG. I don't have many highway miles on this car, but a shorter highway trip with no racks was 31 mpg. Thanks to the quick-installation hardware, the SkyBox 16 mounts onto your existing car rack. It didn't matter if I had a head-wind, tail wind, or side wind. This rooftop cargo box has 16 cubic feet of glorious cargo space. I was getting only 19-20 MPG, at 65-70 mph. Then, I drove 1200 miles last weekend to some ice climbing in Montana and my MPG really suffered. I really had to play with the spacing of the bars and clamps to fit without blocking the liftgate. Whispbar have been making superb roof bars/roof bike carriers and kayak carriers. and adds "just enough extra space", but it's too long (about 90" long). Furr圜rew (at 18:10) Whispbar was a New Zealand company that was bought out by Yakima last year. Running into your garage will, unfortunately, void the box's warranty. Be sure to measure the total height of the vehicle with the Yakima SkyBox 18 Carbonite Cargo Box installed, and keep that information handy (on the inside of your sun visor is a great place). But I wouldn't recommend it because of its length. If you drive an SUV or van, probably not. If you have further questions please contact us here, or by phone at 88 during business hours.I have an older Yakima Space Booster. Click hereto see how to make the measurements, or refer to the attached PDF. If you are concerned with possibility of hatch contact there are a few simple measurements you can take to determine if there may be any interference with the cargo box when your hatch is open. Hatch contact is a concern for many users, this is not considered when we call a box as fit, as it doesn't impact the safe attachment of the box to the cross bars. To see if if any of our boxes are options for your vehicle's factory rack please check Fit My Car and enter your vehicle information. Crossbar spread (distance from the front to the rear bar) is too narrow or too wide.If the crossbars are curved, gaps between the bottom and the top may occur which can cause the box to fly open on the road. The crossbars (or mounting points) may sag or incur damage from the weight of the box and your gear. The crossbars may be too low to the roof for our mounting hardware to clear which may cause some scratching. Our cargo boxes will fit most factory cross bars, fitting the bar is only part of the equation. There are several reasons why we may not recommend using a cargo box with your factory crossbars.
